Day 325 of a year of kindness
This morning I volunteered at Tabitha’s, a thrift store tucked in the basement of a local church. It’s open every Saturday morning and it pulses with kindness. An elderly woman came in looking for a holiday outfit and I found her a faux black mink wrap that made her feel fabulous. I found another woman a black and gold holiday dress. The clothes cost just a few dollars and all of the money goes directly to feed the hungry.
At one point, the credit card machine went offline so only cash was accepted. One young woman had spent an hour selecting clothes and didn’t have cash. She was so disappointed. She didn’t want to wait a whole week before she could return. Fortunately, I had some cash and offered to pay for it. There was nothing awkward about it. She was so relieved to have her bag of clothes and I was glad I could pay for them.
It’s fun to spend a few hours with people who are so committed to helping other people. I left with a spring in my step and this cute kindness shirt.
Science of Kindness: Research reveals that volunteering and helping others contribute to a sense of meaning, which is strongly correlated with long-term well-being. Act of kindness energizes and uplifts the giver and receiver. #BeKind #KindnessCounts #KindnessCounts2025 #kindnessmatters #volunteering
