Day 198 of a year of Kindness
Today’s kindness is short and sweet (and a day late due to intense meds). I had my surgery on my ankle today and it went well. In the course of my treatment each and every nurse and medical assistant who greeted me embodied kindness.
Being in a hospital is such a vulnerable experience and kindness makes all of the difference. Sandra got me warm blankets and was so warm and friendly. Tim, the pre-op nurse, made jokes and referred to me as your majesty. My post op nurse cheerfully wheeled me out of the hospital into my cousin Catherine’s waiting car.
Catherine is a nurse practitioner and she told me that the best thing about hospitals are its nurses. The ability to provide care is a unique gift that makes the most vulnerable feel safe.
Science of Kindness: Research and real life reveal that compassion is the essence and the core of nursing care. Nurses and their affectionate and emotional work incorporate many caring behaviors considered to be the basis of caring with kindness. (Sandra Condon in photo)
