Day 218 of a year of Kindness
Kindness ambassador #19, Julie Seregny Mahoney, sent something very special to an old friend.
I posted a necklace on Instagram that I made, which featured a red porcelain cardinal. An old friend from college noticed it and commented that she wanted to buy it but someone beat her to it. She shared that she loves cardinals because they remind her of her hometown in Michigan and good memories with her father. She lives in Oregon now and never sees a cardinal.
In a follow-up email, I also learned that she has breast cancer that has metastasized. She is very ill. I realized that I had another red porcelain cardinal and decided to make another necklace and send it to her. We were close friends at college in Michigan and time and geography has separated us over the years. She was very important in my life at that time.
I mailed it to her today. I hope when she opens it that she feels cared about and loved. I hope it reminds her of home and that someone out there cares enough about her to do that for her. I hope it makes her smile every time she wears it.
Science of Kindness: Research shows that reaching out to an old friend with a meaningful gift is a huge mental health boost. Gifts from the heart provide emotional comfort and a sense of connection, which is especially crucial during difficult times. Research also reveals that gift-giving can release endorphins and other feel-good chemicals, enhancing mood and reducing stress. #kindness #kindnessisfree #kindessmatters #gifts #CardinalSighting
